Serves Tool

Serves To:USMetric
1 1/2 Pound(lb)  asparagus
1/2 Teaspoon(t)  salt
1/4 Cup(c)  margarine
1/2 Cup(c)  gruyere cheese, grated

Heat oven to 350° F. Break off tough ends of asparagus as far down as stalks snap easily. Arrange in single layer in ungreased rectangular baking dish, 11 by 7 by 1 1/2 inches. Sprinkle with salt. Cover with aluminum foil. Bake about 25 minutes or until tender. Heat margarine over low heat until light brown, then drizzle over asparagus. Sprinkle with cheese. Bake uncovered 5 to 8 minutes or just until cheese softens.

Additional notes

Variation: 2 packages (10 ounces each) of frozen asparagus spears can be substituted for the fresh asparagus. Rinse asparagus with cold water to separate, then drain. Increase first bake time to about 35 minutes.
