This is a spice cake certain to satisfy all the nut lovers in your house.

3/4 Cup(c)  shortening
1 1/4 Cup(c)  brown sugar
3   eggs
1 1/2 Cup(c)  buttermilk
2 3/4 Cup(c)  flour
1 1/3 Teaspoon(t)  baking soda
1/2 Teaspoon(t)  allspice
1 Teaspoon(t)  salt
1 Cup(c)  black walnuts, chopped


Cream shortening and sugar together. Add eggs and beat until lemon-colored. Sift together dry ingredients. Add them alternately with the buttermilk to the creamed mixture, beating well after each addition. Stir in the walnuts. Pour batter into greased 9 by 13 inch pan or two 9 inch round layer pans. Bake 35 to 40 minutes at 350 degrees F.
