Tender lettuce leaves and a buttery avocado decorated with delicate edible flowers make this a lovely starter for a summer luncheon. As if the flowers aren't delightful enough, the passion fruit dressing makes the salad irresistible. Fresh passion fruit can be hard to find, but it's worth seeking out because there's nothing quite like its remarkable flavor. However, if you can't find passion fruit or passion fruit juice in your local market, try a shallot vinaigrette instead. It will be delicious, too.

1 Bunch(bn)  butter lettuce, such as bibb or boston
1/4 Cup(c)  passion fruit vinaigrette
1   ripe avocado, preferably hass
1/2 Cup(c)  assorted edible flowers, such as nasturtiums or pansies


Carefully pull the lettuce leaves from the core, tearing off and discarding any damaged parts. Rinse the leaves under gently running cold water, drain them well, and spin them dry. Wrap the lettuce in a clean kitchen towel or paper towels and refrigerate until serving time. Just before you plan to serve the salad, gently tear the large lettuce leaves into smaller pieces. Keep smaller leaves whole. They'll add volume and texture to the salad. Place all of the lettuce in a large salad bowl and add 3 tablespoons of the passion fruit vinaigrette. Toss to lightly coat the leaves, then taste to see if more vinaigrette is needed. Transfer the lettuce to individual salad plates. Peel the avocado and discard the pit. Cut the avocado lengthwise into thin slices. Arrange 4 or 5 slices in a spoke pattern on top of each salad. Sprinkle the edible flowers on top of the avocado. Serve the salads immediately.
