Although you can certainly make this recipe with semisweet chips, the big chunks of chocolate are especially satisfying and indulgent.

Ingredients

3/4 Cup(c)  brown sugar, firmly packed
1/2 Cup(c)  sugar
1/2 Cup(c)  margarine, softened
1/2 Cup(c)  shortening
5 1/2 Teaspoon(t)  vanilla
1   egg
3 1/4 Cup(c)  all purpose flour
1 Teaspoon(t)  baking soda
1/2 Teaspoon(t)  salt
8 Ounce(oz)  semisweet chocolate, coarsely chopped
1 Cup(c)  nuts, chopped

Preparation

Heat oven to 375°F. In large bowl, combine brown sugar, sugar, margarine and shortening. Beat until light and fluffy. Add vanilla and egg, then blend well. Add flour, baking soda and salt. Mix well. Stir in chocolate and nuts. Drop by tablespoonfuls 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake at 375°F for 9 to 12 minutes, or until light golden brown. Cool 1 minute then remove from cookie sheets.

Additional notes

Note: High altitude (above 3,500 feet) increase flour to 2 cups, then bake as directed.
