A traditional fruitcake with non-traditional icing. The icing adds a tang of citrus to this holiday mainstay.

Ingredients

1/2 Cup(c)  raisins
6 Ounce(oz)  candied fruits, finely chopped
1/2 Cup(c)  walnuts, finely chopped
1 Tablespoon(T)  orange rind, grated
1/4 Cup(c)  flour
1 Package(pk)  date bread mix
1   egg
1 Cup(c)  water
1 Cup(c)  confectioners' sugar
2 Tablespoon(T)  orange juice
16   almonds, peeled and divided into halves

Preparation

Combine the fruits, walnuts, and orange rind with the flour. To make batter: Combine the date bread mix with 1 egg mixed with 1 cup water. Mix for 5 minutes with a spoon. Fold in the fruit mixture. Grease a 9 by 5 inch loaf pan, and line with wax paper. Fold in the batter. Bake in a moderate 350 degrees F oven, for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Cool in the pan. Remove, wrap in foil. Refrigerate overnight. To make icing: Mix the icing sugar with orange juice. Spread over the cake, decorate with almonds.
