Here is an easy nut bread for all the people that love the taste of fruitcake, but not with all the candied fruits usually involved.

1/4 Cup(c)  shortening
1/2 Cup(c)  packed brown sugar
1/2 Cup(c)  granulated sugar
2 1/2 Cup(c)  all-purpose flour
1 1/4 Cup(c)  buttermilk
3 Teaspoon(t)  baking powder
1 Teaspoon(t)  salt
1/2 Teaspoon(t)  baking soda
2   eggs
1 Cup(c)  chopped nuts


Heat oven to 350° F. Grease bottom only of loaf pan, 9 by 5 by 3 inches. Beat all ingredients except nuts in large bowl on low speed 15 seconds. Beat on medium speed 30 seconds, scraping bowl constantly. Stir in nuts. Pour into pan. Bake 60 to 65 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Immediately remove from pan. Cool completely on wire rack before slicing. Garnish top of nut bread with maraschino cherries and sliced green candied pineapple, if desired. For best results, wrap and refrigerate at least 8 hours before slicing.
