My wife cooks this sauce for hours and hours. I prefer an hour and a half, because I like my sauce chunky, but you be the judge. Serve this over your favorite pasta. Mangia!

2 Tablespoon(T)  olive oil
1   large onion, chopped
4 Clove(clv)  large garlic, chopped
84 Ounce(oz)  tomatoes, crushed
10   large fresh basil leaves, cut into thin slivers
1 Tablespoon(T)  sugar, or to taste
1 1/2 Teaspoon(t)  kosher (coarse) salt, or to taste
1/4 Teaspoon(t)  black pepper, freshly ground, or to taste
1/2 Pound(lb)  ground meat, formed into 2 inch balls


Heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium high heat. Add the onion and cook stirring occasionally, until soft and golden, about 7 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring constantly, for another 30 seconds or so. Stir in the tomatoes, half the basil, sugar, salt and pepper. Cover the pan and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 1 1/2 to 2 hours (or longer if you like a smoother sauce). Form the meat mixture into 2 inch balls. After the sauce has cooked for 30 minutes, drop them into it. Let them cook without stirring until they have firmed up a bit, about 30 minutes. Then stir gently and continue cooking in the sauce for another 30 to 60 minutes. Taste the sauce, and adjust the seasonings if necessary. Just before serving, stir in the remaining basil.
