Recipe Description
A Macintosh apple will turn to mush when baked, but a baking variety, as specified here, will hold its shape and improve the overall presentation of this dish.

1/4 Cup(c)  walnut or pecan pieces
1/2 Cup(c)  apple juice or apple cider
1/4 Teaspoon(t)  coriander, ground
1/3 Pound(lb)  small turnips
2   apples, preferably a baking variety such as rome or cortland

Preparation

Preheat the oven to 350° F.  Core the apples, then slice them into rings.  Scrub the turnips clean and cut off the ends, then cut the turnips into thin rounds.  Layer the apples and turnips in a 1 1/2 to 2 quart casserole.  Dust on the coriander.  Pour in the apple juice.  Cover the casserole and bake for 30 minutes.  Uncover the casserole, top with the nuts, and bake for 10 minutes more.
