1 Cup(c)  fine cornmeal
1 Cup(c)  flour
1 Tablespoon(T)  sugar
1 Teaspoon(t)  baking soda
1 Teaspoon(t)  salt
1 Tablespoon(T)  shortening
1   egg, well beaten
1/2 Cup(c)  milk


Sift dry ingredients together. Then work in 1 tablespoonful shortening. Mix to a medium batter with milk or buttermilk. Whip in well beaten egg and bake in a hot 400° F oven.
