Recipe Description
This cake is especially wonderful for breakfast, as you can assemble it the night before and pop it in the oven in the morning. Melissa prefers pecans to the walnuts in the original recipe.

Ingredients

2 Cup(c)  all purpose flour
1 Teaspoon(t)  baking powder
1 Teaspoon(t)  baking soda
1 Teaspoon(t)  cinnamon, ground
1/2 Teaspoon(t)  salt
2/3 Cup(c)  unsalted butter, at room temperature
1/2 Cup(c)  light brown sugar, packed
1 Cup(c)  granulated sugar
2   large eggs, at room temperature
1 Cup(c)  buttermilk, at room temperature
1 Cup(c)  light brown sugar
1/2   pecans, chopped
1 Teaspoon(t)  nutmeg, ground

Preparation

Generously grease a 13 by 9 inch baking pan. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and salt in a bowl. Stir well, and set it aside. Cream the butter and both sugars with an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Reduce the speed to low and add the flour mixture in three additions, alternating with the buttermilk in two additions, beginning and ending with the flour. Scrape the batter into the prepared baking pan. Refrigerate, covered, overnight. When you are ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350° F. Bake the coffee cake on the center oven rack until a cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean, about 45 minutes. Transfer the pan to a wire rack to cool. Cut the coffee cake into squares, and serve it warm or at room temperature. Mix all the topping ingredients together in a bowl. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the batter and pat it lightly.
