A down home favorite, and perfect served right from the skillet. For festive holiday flair, just before baking, arrange thin slices of red or green bell peppers in the shape of Christmas trees on top of the batter.

1 1/2 Cup(c)  cormneal
1/2 Cup(c)  all purpose flour
1/2 Cup(c)  cheddar cheese, shredded
1/4 Cup(c)  shortening
1 1/2 Cup(c)  buttermilk
2 Teaspoon(t)  baking powder
1 Teaspoon(t)  sugar
1 Teaspoon(t)  salt
1/2 Teaspoon(t)  baking soda
1/2 Teaspoon(t)  chile powder
2   eggs
1 Can(cn)  green chiles, well drained and chopped


Heat oven to 450° F. Grease 10 inch ovenproof skillet. Mix all ingredients. Beat vigorously 30 seconds. Pour into skillet. Bake about 20 minutes, or until golden brown. Serve warm.
