Recipe Description
This classic Irish recipe is extremely healthy and couldn't be easier to make. It's delicious served warm with slices of mature cheddar cheese.

Ingredients

2 1/2 Cup(c)  whole wheat flour
1 1/2 Cup(c)  steel cut oats
2 Teaspoon(t)  baking soda
1 Teaspoon(t)  salt
1 Teaspoon(t)  sugar
1 1/4 Cup(c)  buttermilk
4 Tablespoon(T)  2% milk

Preparation

Preheat the oven to 400° F. Place the flour, oats, baking soda, salt and sugar in a large bowl. Make a well in the center and gradually beat in the buttermilk and enough milk to form a soft dough. Knead the dough for 5 minutes, or until smooth. Shape into a round about 8 inches in diameter. Using a sharp knife, cut a deep cross on the top of the dough. Place on a non stick baking pan. Bake for 30 to 45 minutes, or until the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. Serve warm or leave to cool on a wire rack.
