Recipe Description
Bagna Cauda is a popular dish that is served in Italy on Christmas Eve.  It has spicy flavor that is best served with vegetables.

4 Slice(sli)  thin slices of french bread
5 Clove(clv)  garlic, minced or pressed
2 Ounce(oz)  flat anchovy fillets
1 1/2 Teaspoon(t)  pepper
2 Tablespoon(T)  lemon juice
1 Cup(c)  butter
1/2 Cup(c)  olive oil


In heat proof container, combine butter, oil, garlic, lemon juice and pepper.  Heat over medium heat, stirring, until butter is melted.  Drain oil from anchovies into butter mixture.  Finely chop anchovies and stir in.  To serve, dip vegetables into sauce.  Hold a slice of bread under each bite to catch any drips as you eat.  Keep sauce warm over a candle or low alcohol flame, or reheat periodically.  Sauce may brown slightly, but don't let it burn.  Makes about two cups.
