Recipe Description
Macaroni and cheese is a long standing American favorite meal. This recipe incorporates ham into a baked casserole version, which is baked to bubbling perfection.

Ingredients

3 1/2 Cup(c)  uncooked bow tie pasta
1/4 Cup(c)  butter
1 Clove(clv)  garlic, minced
1/4 Cup(c)  all purpose flour
2 Cup(c)  milk
1 1/2 Cup(c)  extra sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
4 Drop(dr)  hot pepper sauce
1 Cup(c)  cooked ham, julienne cut (1 1/2 by 1/4 by 1/4 inch)

Preparation

Heat oven to 375 degrees F. Spray 1 1/2 quart casserole with nonstick cooking spray. Cook pasta to desired doneness as directed on package. Drain, then return to saucepan. Meanwhile, melt butter in medium saucepan over medium heat. Add garlic and cook 1 minute. With wire whisk, blend in flour, then cook and stir 1 minute. Add milk. Cook until mixture boils and thickens, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to low. Add cheese and stir until melted. Stir in hot pepper sauce. If desired, add salt and pepper to taste. Add ham and mix well. Add cheese sauce to cooked pasta. Stir until well mixed. Spoon into sprayed casserole. Bake at 375 degrees F for 25 to 30 minutes, or until lightly browned and bubbly.

Additional notes

Make Ahead Directions: These directions work best if you substitute an 8 inch square (2 quart) baking dish for the 1 1/2 quart casserole. Prepare recipe as directed above, but do not bake. Cover with foil and freeze. When ready to use, do not thaw. Bake, covered, at 350° F for 1 1/2 hours. Uncover and bake an additional 10 minutes, or until lightly browned and mixture is bubbly.
