Recipe Description
The all important backyard barbecue often leaves vegetarians, and vegans alike, out of the fun. Veggie burgers are a great alternative to the standard carnivorous fare, but many of them can't stand up to the grill. Barbecue sauce and black beans make this a hearty, grill worthy burger.

Ingredients

1 Cup(c)  tvp granules
1 Cup(c)  water
1 Tablespoon(T)  soy sauce
15 Ounce(oz)  black beans, drained and rinsed
1/2 Cup(c)  vital wheat gluten flour
1/4 Cup(c)  barbecue sauce, plus more for basting
1 Tablespoon(T)  liquid smoke
1/2 Teaspoon(t)  black pepper
2 Tablespoon(T)  creamy natural peanut butter

Preparation

Reconstitute the TVP by mixing it with the water and soy sauce in a microwave safe bowl, covering tightly with plastic wrap, and microwaving on high for 5 minutes. Alternatively, you can pour boiling water over the TVP and soy sauce, then cover and let stand for 10 minutes. Add the beans, wheat gluten, 1/4 cup barbecue sauce, liquid smoke, pepper and peanut butter to the reconstituted TVP once it is cool enough to handle. Mush it together with your hands until it is uniform and most of the beans are mashed up. Form into 6 patties. Grill these babies up on the barbecue, brushing with the additional barbecue sauce as you go, about 5 minutes per side. Alternatively, these can be pan fried in a bit of oil, then topped with additional barbecue sauce.
